Chapter 2 is not frightening maybe one or two scenes that are jumpy, what is frightening is the predictability of the story which like the plot is slow. This is later explained as an appropriate reaction, but it also captures the vibe of Insidious 2: Ghost Pianos, which is restless and sort of angry. Weerasethakul accepts ghosts as basically being unfixed in time and reminds us that we're future ghosts as well (so time won't matter to us either soon), and great horror films have been made about ghosts that are temporal imprints of people with 'unfinished business' who need their mysteries solved, but Wan rationalises it as life/limbo/afterlife. Do you want to watch a movie and be scared? There is a very clever seen towards the end but I found the flashbacks annoying.

Although I was happy to see Jocelin Donahue, the star of the brilliant The House of the Devil appearing in this film. The opening scene is of the past, when Lorraine asked for the help of Elise via an acquaintance of theirs, Carl, regarding her young son, Josh. My only real gripe that stops this from living up to The Conjuring films are the frequent jumpscares, and the characters, who feel less real and important. The thing is they left off the original in such a state that it was kind of hard to continue on in a way that would be as simplistic and creepy as the first. Please try again It carries on right where the first Insidious left off and some scenes cleverly take place during events that happened in the first one.
